Who we are


Alex R. Kaulfuss, Ph.D., NBCT
Executive Director

Dr. Alex R. Kaulfuss is a nationally recognized educator, instructional technologist, and consultant with over two decades of experience spanning English, mathematics, and computer science. He currently serves as the English Department Chair at Wake County Public School System, having previously led both the Mathematics and Computer Programming departments. Across these roles, Dr. Kaulfuss has designed and implemented rigorous, research-based, and technology-integrated curricula that meet the diverse needs of 21st-century learners.
In addition to classroom leadership, he develops customized software tools to streamline school operations and enhance data-informed decision-making. His work bridges pedagogy, technology, and organizational advancement, and he mentors new educators while fostering professional growth and collaboration among colleagues.
Dr. Kaulfuss serves as a Professional Learning Lead Facilitator for Code.org and the NC State University Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, training teachers nationally in AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A. He is also the founder of Kaulfuss Education Consulting, providing tailored professional development and learning solutions to school districts and organizations across North Carolina.
He holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction, a Master of Science in English Education, and a B.A. in English Education from North Carolina State University, along with multiple certifications including Red Hat Certified System Administrator and National Board Certification in English/Language Arts. Proficient in multiple programming languages—including JavaScript, Python, Java, C/C++, HTML/CSS, PHP, SQL, and mySQL—Dr. Kaulfuss combines technical expertise with educational leadership to advance student learning and educator development.
His work has been recognized through awards such as the AP CSP Female Diversity Award, the Jenrette Teaching Excellence Award, and fellowship with the Capital Area Writing Project. Dr. Kaulfuss is committed to promoting literacy, educational equity, and the integration of technology across K–12 and higher education.

Elizabeth Kaulfuss, M.a., NBCT

Elizabeth Kaulfuss is an accomplished literacy leader, educator, and theater director with over 25 years of experience across K–12 education. She currently serves as Literacy Coach at Wake Early College of Information and Biotechnologies (WECIB), where she leads professional development initiatives, co-teaches with educators to enhance Project-Based Learning (PBL), and drives curriculum development school-wide. She also supports college readiness, guiding students through ACT/SAT preparation, college essays, and first-generation college success strategies. Under her guidance, WECIB has achieved an A rating, a 100% pass rate in English II, and strong AP exam results.
In addition to her leadership in literacy, she serves as Drama Director at WECIB, overseeing all aspects of theatrical productions from script interpretation to stage direction, production management, and student engagement. She has directed performances including a series of Edgar Allan Poe plays and Check, Please, cultivating creativity and critical thinking in students.
Her career includes extensive leadership roles in multiple Wake County schools, serving as English Department Chair, Literacy Coach, and Intervention Coordinator. She has a proven record in mentoring teachers, leading Professional Learning Communities, designing curriculum, and implementing research-based literacy strategies that promote measurable student growth. She has also coordinated book clubs and theater programs, fostering student engagement beyond the classroom.
Elizabeth holds a Master’s degree in Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum & Instruction: Literacy and Leadership from Missouri University and a Bachelor’s in English Education from North Carolina State University. She is a National Board-Certified Teacher, Reading Specialist K–12, and Montessori-trained educator. Her teaching and leadership have been recognized with multiple honors including Teacher of the Year, Mentor Teacher certification, and AP College Board training.
Her work reflects a deep commitment to literacy, student achievement, teacher development, and the integration of creative arts into education.
